Dartmoor Classic Supported Charities for 2010

While the Dartmoor Classic annually makes substantial donations to several good causes, of its own choosing, it is promoted as a cyclo-sportive event and not a charity ride. We are aware that, through individual sponsorship, participants do target the event to raise funds for charities of their own particular preference; and this we fully support. This year, we are announcing our choices of beneficiaries ahead of the event and, if you want to use your ride to collect money for a good cause but have not yet chosen one, then may we suggest you consider one of those we will be supporting to benefit from your efforts.

FORCE (Friends of the Oncology and Radiotherapy Centre, Exeter) (Registered Charity 296884) was founded in 1987. The charity is based in Exeter, Devon and supports a clinical research programme at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital as well as providing  professional support to families and carers. FORCE now has a purpose built cancer support and information centre which receives over 13,000 visits every year.

Despite many years of growth and change FORCE has never lost sight of it's origins and the fact that anyone diagnosed with cancer deserves the best possible support and treatment close to home.

"Simple, sustainable transportation is an essential element in disaster assistance and poverty relief. Bicycles fulfill basic needs by providing access to healthcare, education and economic development. Bicycles empower individuals, their families, and their communities. Our mission is to provide access to independence and livelihood through The Power of Bicycles".

World Bicycle Relief's project for 2010 is "Bicycles for Educational Empowerment" and seeks to provide 50,000 bicycles to school children, teachers and school volunteers in rural Zambia where children are especially at risk for extreme poverty and high HIV/ AIDS infection rates. By providing safe, reliable transportation, these children will be able to complete their secondary education, improving the health and economic prospects for them and their communities.
